Smoky Quartz
SiO2
Smoky Quartz gets its distinct dark-brown to black color due to free, radical silicon atoms in the quartz tetrahedra structure caused by natural irradiation. Extremely dark Smoky Quartz has been called “Morion” since the times of Pliny the Elder. Some smoky quartz is artificially irradiated to give a deep smoky color.
